There are many types of surgeon jobs available, and many specialties to pursue in the medical profession of surgery. After many years of education in the field of medicine, there are those who continue on to pursue an career in surgical fields.

Many types of surgical specialties exist. A general surgeon, for example focuses on the abdominal organs which would include the intestines, stomach, colon, esophagus, gallbaldder, liver and bile ducts. In the United States, and some other countries as well, a general surgeon is also responsible for breast care, including the surgical treatment for breast cancer. Another sub-specialty in the field of general surgery is trauma care. A general surgeon is often the first one called to treat a patient requiring emergency surgery, and be able to stabilize the patient if further treatment is required at a later time.

Cardiac surgery is another surgical specialty. Cardiac surgeons operate on hearts and lungs, and although they spend an additional ten years in school the need for cardiac surgeons is dropping because of the advances made in cardiac care. Fewer people are requiring cardiac bypass surgery, and therefore the job market seems to be decreasing for cardiac surgeons.

Brain surgery, however, seems to still be worth the extra years spent studying and working in the field through residency and fellowships. An average of twenty years is spent learning and training to become a brain surgeon, and the rewards are many. Of course, the salary paid to surgeons who do brain surgery are among the highest, but it is shaking the hand of someone who was previously paralyzed which is the biggest reward for someone who has studied and worked to be able to do such miracles. Brain surgeons are able to perform very delicate, and very long surgeries and must have extreme mental and physical stamina to do so.

Surgeon jobs are generally very rewarding, regardless of the specialty. Being able to help people and change lives is something most of us only dream about. Looking into the face of a parent whose child lived because of an emergency surgery you performed is simply not something you can put a dollar amount on. Surgeons work long hours, and are often called away from home and family events to take care of another, and because of this, they deserve the respect and high salaries they earn. Surgeon jobs are some of the most rewarding jobs on earth.
